Project Description

The Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Tunnel in Hong Kong will provide a direct link between the Western New Territories (Tuen Mun) and the future new boundary crossing facility (BCF) next to the HK International Airport.

Bouygues Construction subsidiary Dragages Hong Kong was awarded the design and build contract consisting of a twin-tube subsea tunnel of approximately 5 km length. The tunnels will be built with two TBMs. One of the tunnels begins its route with a very large diameter of 17.6 m which will have to be changed back to the standard diameter of 13.8m after several hundred meters.

The TBMs are assembled at the launching shaft located at the reclaimed island at the North. VSL was appointed for the design of the custom-sized lifting gantry and the supervision of the lifting and lowering operations. The lifting gantry is equipped with 4 pairs of strand jacks type SMU120 operated in combination with 4 pairs of strand coilers. There are several phases with over 100 heavy lift operations to be carried out over a period of about 3 years. The heaviest lift is the 550t cutterhead with a diameter of 18m. 

The opening of the tunnel is scheduled for end of 2018.
